The Helsinki based Sanaksenaho Architects actualized this copper gladded church on an island end to Turku / Finland. In the landscape of the island of Hirvensalo, wooded hills arise from the flat areas. The chapel is aligned east west atop one of the hills. It is locating centering the landscape. The surrounding existing constructions, which are parts of the serve centre meant for cancer patients, form a village from which the chapel arises. The copper surface of the chapel will go green by time so the constructing will be in harmoniousness with colorizing of the surrounding trees. The form of the chapel speaks softly. The intention was to make a large landscapes sculpture and a little building.
The foyer leads to the big hall, the stomach of the fish. The fish was a symbolization of first Christians. The early symbol accommodates to the chapel, because it’s ecumenical, that is meant for all Christians in spite of their congregation. The chapel and the gallery are one space. The gallery is to the backside of the blank space and the chapel to the front. The altar is at the close of the axis. In the backside space, the benches are taken out while there’s an art exhibition.
The interior is of pinewood. The contrastive play of light and darkness powerfully articulates the interior of the blank space. The wooden pine ribs of the building are lit by spotlights. Strong indirect brightness enters from both lasts of the chapel. The altar windowpane is an artwork made by artist Hannu Konola.
